It usually results from a complication of allergies or the common cold. This type of infection is more common in children. However, the symptoms and treatments are basically the same for older children and adults.

With Acute Otitis Media, you will feel your ear pain while showing red and swollen eardrums. Depending on gravity, most people recover from this infection without the need for antibiotics or treatment. However, because otolaryngologists cannot predict who the infection will heal on their own, otolaryngologists still prescribe antibiotics such as amoxicillin to all of their patients, especially those who are severely ill with it or if symptoms have not subsided after 72 hours.

Since pain relief is vital, most doctors also prescribe pain relievers such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen such as Tylenol. However, if there is persistent or severe pain accompanied by fever and a swollen eardrum, a tympanotomy should be performed by an otolaryngologist.

The otolaryngologist will create an opening in the eardrum to drain fluid from the middle ear, or middle ear. This opening will heal in time. No treatment is necessary. Thus, the procedure will not affect one’s hearing. Thus, for those who frequently suffer from acute otitis media, ENT doctors will suggest placing tympanostomy or drainage tubes inside the eardrum.

These days, more and more people are becoming practical and self-reliant. Although it is a general rule not to self-medicate, especially with children, there are those who still prefer traditional methods of self-medication.

Here are some of the most common earache treatments:

herbal drops
These drops contain different oils, especially garlic oil. Garlic is known as a natural antibiotic which means it has antibacterial properties. At first, you need to warm the bottle in a cup of hot water and then put 3 drops in the affected ear. You can use the hair dryer for about 3 minutes on a low setting. Next, use a heated folded cloth placed inside a zip-lock bag. You need to do this about 3 to 4 times a day.

heating pad
Place a heating pad under a pillowcase. You can lie on it and take a nap or sleep for a while.

tiger balm
Carefully apply some tiger balm along the outside of the painful ear canal. Apply some analgesic up to the neck, under the aching ear. You can also apply a moist, warm compress to the sore ear and go to sleep.

peroxide and alcohol
Using a small cap, mix about 50% peroxide and 50% alcohol. Then I drop it on the sore ear. You will see some bubbles. When it stops bubbling, turn it over and leave it to drain. You can repeat the procedure as you see fit. This will not only warm the ear, but also kill bacteria.

Cotton wool stick and olive oil
Dip about half a cotton swab in warm water and olive oil. Gently place the bud inside the aching ear and leave it for a while. After a few seconds, take it out.

Steamed potatoes
Cut the potatoes into two parts. Heat half a potato in the microwave until very hot. Place the hot potato on a cloth and let the steam flow into the affected ear canals. Let the steam flow until the potatoes are cool.

Salt in a sock
Put a frying pan on low heat and pour some salt into the pan. Then place the hot salt inside a clean sock, and place the sock over your sore ear. You will feel relief within a few minutes.

alcohol
Put some alcohol in a mug and heat it in the microwave for about 5 seconds. Let it cool for a few seconds and gently pour a few drops into the aching ear.

hair dryer
Blow gently through your nose while closing your nostrils. Using a hair dryer, place it on a low setting and point it at your aching ear from a distance.

alcohol and white vinegar
Put a few drops of alcohol on the sore ear. Then put a few drops of white vinegar before lying down for 10 minutes. Your sore side should be the top. After a few minutes, place the jar with the sore side down and lie down on a hot, damp towel. Wait for the towel to cool down, reheat it and repeat the procedure for about 4 times.

A viral or bacterial infection of the middle ear is called acute otitis media.
