While it may be annoying at first, you may want to consider the Bichon Frize’s biting behavior as a sign of possible temperament problems in your pet.

Why might a dog as friendly and cuddly as the Bichon Frize bite? One good reason is that your Bichon may be teething. Some puppies get very irritated by the teeth sticking out of the gums, which causes them to gnaw and gnaw on anything and everything, including your hand. Note that the main difference between a Bichon Frize biting and teething is that your dog won’t just bite; They will also nibble. When this happens, simply tell them, “No!” firmly and give them a bone or a sturdy teething toy.

Now if the bite is accompanied by signs of aggression—including growling or barking, and your Bichon takes a defensive stance with ears flat to the sides of the head, bared teeth, and legs spread apart in preparation to flee or attack—your dog may be suffering from temperament issues.

Bichons that suffer from separation anxiety may bite their owners just to get their attention. In cases of dogs that have joined their owners in a new home, they may become so anxious and agitated by the sudden change in surroundings that they may bite at any sign of aggression.

Biting is a behavior that you will need to expect in rescued Bichons. Some of these pets come from conditions as deplorable as puppy mills, where they had to compete with other dogs for food and other essential items. Others had cruel owners screaming or hitting them. Depending on the situation, Bichons regard the act of biting as a means of self-defense as well as protecting their territory.

Aggressive Bichons will require more patience and understanding from you. If your Bichon growls at you, soothe him with soft, gentle words. Never pat your head, as this will make it easier for them to bite you. Instead, gently rub his back. If your dog snaps at you or even actually bites you, give him another “No!” Never attack them with anger. If the dog is attached to your hand, rub his back reassuringly and carefully open his jaws to free your hand. As soon as you release your hand, you must repeat the word “No!” And shake your head at them to let them know this is not behavior you can tolerate.

If all attempts to calm the biting Bichons fail, it may be necessary to bring your dog to a kennel trainer. He or she has the experience to apply behavior modification techniques to reduce Bichon Frize biting behaviors. You can find trainers by doing a web search or by making inquiries with animal welfare groups in your local area.

Some new pet owners may find themselves experiencing the shock of their lives when the cute and cuddly Bichon Frize suddenly bites them on the hand or on another body part.
